Iris Toben-Smith joined our family 10 years ago after being adopted from PACC as a 1-year-old stray. Back then, her shelter name was Broadway, so we like to think that is where she had some dramatic run-in with the dog catcher. Whatever her first year on the streets was like, we’ll never really know—but it definitely helped shape who she is today. Iris has never met a stranger. She greets almost everyone like they’re a long-lost friend—unless she’s distracted by an irresistible smell, of course. We never trained her to do anything special, but she’s picked up her own sweet habits: the way she leans into people’s legs and looks up at them, how she rushes in to tell Carol all about her walk, and the way she patiently lets our slightly bonkers cat snuggle up to her. Honestly, how did we get so lucky?
